Understanding the role of RTP as a theoretical average measure is key to choosing online slot games that match your risk profile and gameplay goals. Read on to learn what RTP and volatility mean in practice, where to find the figures, and why RTP alone doesn't describe the experience of a short session of play.

What RTP Tells You, and What It Doesn't

PAGCOR, the national gaming regulator of the Philippines, defines "Return To Player percentage" or "RTP%" in its electronic games manual as the theoretical return to a player of the value of all prizes awarded by a game, as a percentage of all bets made on that game over a large volume of gameplay.

In other words, RTP is the average payout percentage an idealised player would receive from a slot machine over the long run, assuming enough spins to flatten out random variation.

For example, Sweet Bonanza by Pragmatic Play has a published RTP of 96.48%, and Gates of Olympus by the same provider lists 96.50%. This means the house keeps, in theory, 3.52% and 3.50% of all money wagered, respectively, as its long-term edge: about PHP 3.52 per PHP 100 wagered on Sweet Bonanza. Short sessions can deviate widely from that figure.

How RTP Appears on Slot Game Screens and Info Pages

Most slots show the game's RTP percentage in the help or info screen. A full game sheet can say much more. PG Soft's official sheet for Piñata Wins, for example, lists an RTP of 96.76%, a hit rate of 27.70%, medium volatility and a maximum win of 5,000x the bet, and it even splits the RTP: the base game contributes 68.46% and the bonus feature 28.29%.

Each session, though, starts as if the RTP figure meant nothing, because it only takes effect across the long run. A player needs to make thousands of bets to see the RTP ratio materialise as an average.

Volatility: the Clue to Risk

It's not just about the odds of winning or losing; it's more about the scale of those wins and losses. How volatile a slot is, in addition to its theoretical RTP, determines the risk-return profile of gameplay.

Volatility describes the distribution of payouts. Volatile games concentrate payouts into a few big wins, paying out less often but with larger amounts. Conversely, low-volatility games provide more frequent but smaller wins. Two games with the same RTP can have very different volatility.

Among JILI games, Super Ace is listed with low-medium volatility and a 10,000x maximum win. Fortune Gems is listed with 5 lines, low-medium volatility, and a 375x maximum win.

Low volatility usually means longer sessions, more frequent and smaller wins, and smaller prizes.

Are Some Slot Games "Better"?

Given that a slot won't tell you how much you'll win or lose in the short term, is it then possible one slot is "better" than another using these measures as a guide? The answer, broadly, is that it depends on the player's goals.

The RTP figure is a theoretical average reached only over a large volume of play, while volatility describes the risk-reward profile of gameplay rather than being a predictor of wins.

Conclusion

When deciding on a slot game, RTP is a crucial figure to watch for, as it tells you the theoretical average payout of the game in the long run.

However, when deciding how a game will feel during actual gameplay sessions, it's more important to consider the game's volatility.

For these measures, always look to the official game information page. The numbers on the screen describe the design of the game, not the map of an actual session of play, and they don't promise any particular outcome.
