Aggregate, away goals, penalties
In two-legged knockout ties, the aggregate goals decide the fate of a team, with the advancing side being the team that scores the higher cumulative tally over both legs. If scores remain tied on aggregate, the away goals rule is applied. Still tied? No extra time is played, proceeding straight to a penalty shoot-out to decide the tie.
Teams that finish as runners-up in their national leagues, having not qualified for the Champions League, are eligible for the second-tier CAF Confederation Cup.
